Circle of Life?

So this happened.

Melbourne, Australia.

The boys were still getting over their beach trip and have been laying around the house all day sleeping. They were so tired I had to force them outside. So that’s what I did. Brendan was on break and we hung out for 10 or so minutes and then he went back upstairs. I continued puttering around and was like “the boys have been outside for awhile must be enjoying the sun”.

They don’t usually sit outside for long. They go out for two reasons and then their banging at the door. Occasionally if there is a nice breeze they’ll sit for a second but once they catch you looking they’ll be wanting back in the house. So, I was hesitant on bothering them cause the less they’re in the house the better but like any pet owner (or parent) you have to go and see what their up to. Cause usually when they’re quiet their up to no good.

I sneakily stuck my head from around the corner of the sliding door and saw the two of them huddled in the corner of the yard looking at something. The grass needs a good trim so I couldn’t make out exactly what they were doing. I waited a couple more seconds and saw Ollie chewing on something white. I threw open the door and started yelling “OI!! NO!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? WHAT ARE YOU DOING??”. He didn’t care. He looked up at me with something hanging out of his mouth and was still chewing. It hung like a mouse but there was no eyes or tail. Or any distinctive rodent features. Plus, I’ve never seen a mouse around here.

I was outside completely now. Dressed only in a bra and underwear. I didn’t anticipate for me to be needing to go outside and whatever was happening in my backyard couldn’t wait for me to run upstairs to find something to throw on.

The closer I got the more I felt horrified. ”NO YOU DIDN’T!! OH MY GOD!! YOU’VE GOT TO BE FUCKING KIDDING ME!! GET OUT OF HERE! GET OUT!” Sitting right in front of me was a broken carboard box. All torn up sprayed across the grass. I could see a hole dug up and a plastic bag hanging out of the ground. Then it all clicked in and I felt sick.

The tissue Ollie was so gleefully chewing on was the same tissue that covered the bodies of…. Yup… Slappy and Gojo. My poor fisheys. I’m not too sure who ate who or exactly what Vader’s involvement in this was but I shuffled them both inside in disbelief and yet I wasn’t’ surprised and felt VERY MUCH at fault. I guess with the hot days they must have got a scent in their nose and I had a vague feeling it wasn’t buried deep enough. But I guess I gave my dogs the benefit of the doubt.

“We were having such a good day, guys! What happened!?”

I started freaking out and googling stuff like “Can my dog die from eating rotten fish?” “My dog has ate decaying fish what do I do?” “Can dogs get salmonella?” All the responses were pretty negative and said I should induce vomiting. Great… how do I do that? All the while I’m googling this I see the boys staring at me like nothing happened.

I finally decided to give the vet a call and get some advice. In the back of my head I was trying to go through my finances and hoped the vet accepted payment plans because if one dog is expensive to treat then two is even worse.

I gave her the story: “So I just need some advice. Umm… my dogs dug up and ate my pet fish. Two of them. They died about a week ago but, I’m not sure what to do. Should I bring them in? Should I watch them?”

She didn’t sound too surprised with anything and probably heard way worse. She ohhed and ahhed alot. Even gave me a little story of her own (she had the same thing happen except with her dogs) which I guess helped put my mind at ease?? All in all she told me not to worry. Just monitor them and watch for throwing up and the usual poops. If any of that occurred then put them on a fast for a day and if it continued then bring them in. But because Slappy and Gojo died of natural causes (by natural meaning not poisoned) the bacteria should just mess up their stomachs.

I got off the phone and looked at them still horrified. They looked back at me like they wanted to know the call outcome. They didn’t of course but I told them I’d be watching them and not to be sick or they’re going to the vet.

This was yesterday and today there’s been no issues. Everyone’s normal. I can’t stop thinking of it though and it’s kind of weird. I went to pet Ollie and he stunk! Absolutely reeked of fish. Slappy. He smelled like Slappy and I was like… okay. Now I have two pets in one. As my friend and Brendan called it “the circle of life”. But I don’t really think that’s how it works when the link in that circle is buried in the backyard.

So that happened.

I was going to asked if they rolled in them first? I think you answered the question. That’s what dogs do. Sorry your poor fish couldn’t rest in peace.

Any bets Vader did. He’s the roller. But they don’t smell like fish was just initially. And yeah, I guess they didn’t rest well. I’m just happy this whole thing isn’t as bad as it could have been. I suppose I forgot how dogs act!

Dog’s love rolling in stinky dead things, getting sprayed by skunks, eating kitty tootsie rolls out of the kitty litter, etc. Most everything that grosses us out dogs like to do.
